Learning Disabilities and Your Child

March 1, 2011 By Judy Lipson

Tahquamenon FallsBy Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Come with me on an informative journey to learn about learning disabilities. You will learn how to recognize a possible learning disability in your child, as well as strategies to make the challenges easier (whether or not there is a certified learning disability).

For a child to have a learning disability there must be a discrepancy (difference) between their IQ Score (intelligence) and their achievement scores (academic levels). School districts use different discrepancy scores.

There are 7 areas of learning disabilities and a person can have a learning disability in one or more of these areas. [Read more…]

Empower Your Child

February 1, 2011 By Judy Lipson

Peacock

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Some children encounter bullying. It is right for parents to be sure that schools and other organizations take precautions to educate and protect children from bullying behaviors. It is also important for parents to teach children how to handle bullies and bullying.

I have taught many children and adults empowerment skills. The first step in the process is a discussion of why others bully. Typically bullies are individuals who are fearful or sad. Sadness and fear can become anger, and for some individuals it turns into aggression. Some bullies learn the behavior because other family members have bullied them.Understanding the reasons for bullying can provide understanding and compassion for the bully, but your child still needs to know what to do! These techniques can be taught to children of all ages. The words can be varied as needed. [Read more…]

Body Image

When reading the title of this article you probably thought about your body and were less than kind. Body image is about perceptions of the body and can be discussed as what is seen, and what is thought to be seen. These are actually quite different and the result can have frightening consequences on the health and wellness of your child. [Read more…]

Reigning in Commercialism

Comet

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Happy Holidays! December  is known for holidays and gift giving, and merchants won’t let you forget it. Holiday songs can be heard on the radio in many stores, even before Halloween. Customers are bombarded by advertisements for children’s toys and the latest technological advancement that every adolescent and adult must own. Families enter the holidays intending to make purchases within a budget, yet most admit after the holidays that they have overspent. If you have made a commitment this year to spend less – good for you! Let me, explain the reasons, besides financial, why this is beneficial. [Read more…]

Stress Relief through Gratitude

November 1, 2010 By Judy Lipson

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Holidays are traditionally times of high stress for families. Parents are concerned about finances, selecting the perfect gift, extended families, travel, menus, diets and busy schedules. People can experience it anytime, but stress seems most apparent during the holidays. Even if children aren’t consciously aware of parental concerns, they are little sponges for the moods and emotions around them, so they may mirror stress, as well as experiencing their own. It is, therefore, important to try to reduce the stress levels of all family members this holiday season. There is no better way to do that than to embrace the true spirit of Thanksgiving. Creating a Successful School Year

September 1, 2010 By Judy Lipson

Fall trees

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

September is here and school begins again. Some children are “cheerful consumers” and can’t wait to learn everything that their teachers give them. Others are less interested and hope to avoid homework whenever possible.

Many readers are familiar with the child who says, “I don’t have any homework. I did it in school.” They end up with a poor grade because the homework was not done. I can hear your sighs of recognition right now. To avoid this vicious circle, I recommend that all students have a daily study time ritual to start the year off right. [Read more…]

Homework Helper

March 1, 2010 By Judy Lipson

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Homework is the most frequent concern for students, parents and teachers. Let’s look at some of the reasons students have trouble with homework and specific ways to ease the conflict.

The student doesn’t turn in homework that you KNOW was completed: This is often the most distressing for families. Some students don’t remember to turn in the work; some can’t find it. The solution is to give the student a specific homework folder. The left pocket is for homework that needs to be completed and for notes or returned work to be filed (file that evening into the appropriate subject folders). The right pocket is for assignments to be turned in. With this system, papers won’t be lost in the bottom of the backpack. Also, if the student did not hear the teacher’s instruction to turn in the assignment, there is a much better chance that it will be found in a later class. The student can then turn it in before points are deducted. [Read more…]

Spiritual Evolution: Walking Our Path Together

January 5, 2005 By Judy Lipson

Rainbow over Alaskan mountains

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

Have you noticed that in increasing numbers, people are opening to their spirituality?  We are sensing an awareness of our alignment with the Universe.  We are striving to develop this alignment and our intuition, and are given increasing support by our society. It is no longer an activity or belief that must be hidden.  It is now commonplace to find others with whom to share experiences, knowledge and truths. Books are plentiful in bookstores with whole sections (and stores) devoted to the New Age.  Movies and TV dedicate stories to this theme with large viewer participation.  There is comfort in knowing that others have spiritual beliefs and that we can share our experiences of past lives, chakras, medical intuition, angels, spirit guides, spiritual counselors, meditation, etc. without fear of alienation and isolation. Indigo Children & Schools

School Children

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

I’ve been an educator for 25 years. I believe I’ve always been drawn to the children that we now call Indigo. What’s an Indigo child? There are several books with information regarding this group. Doreen Virtue in her book, The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children, describes them as having a birth date (typically) after 1978. She lists nearly 20 characteristics, many of which are the qualities that I use for identification.

Soul-to-Soul Communication

September 4, 2004 By Judy Lipson

waves on Lake Michigan beach

By Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

There’s a wonderful opportunity to assist communication when words seem to fail. I found many opportunities to use this style when my children were adolescents. They were angry, hurt, resentful (most parents of an adolescent can recognize the moment), and wouldn’t listen to my verbal words; nor would they accept a physical hug. At night I would speak to them from my heart, and share the meta-physical hug that they would otherwise not accept. The next day I would feel a reduced tension between my child and me, and thus the healing began. [Read more…]
